Ethereum Is Trying to Turn Layer 2 Fragmentation Into a Unified Economic Zone Ethereum still accounts for the largest share of DeFi activity, and builders are now trying to solve the ecosystem’s next structural problem: fragmentation across Layer 2s. A newly proposed Ethereum Economic Zone would allow smart contracts on different rollups to interact synchronously and settle back to Ethereum without relying on traditional bridges. The goal is not just technical elegance. It is to rebuild shared liquidity, composability, and user flow across an increasingly splintered L2 landscape. If it works, Ethereum’s next phase will be less about scaling throughput and more about restoring economic cohesion across its own network universe. Uranium Finance Charges Show DeFi Exploits Are Becoming Prosecutable, Not Just Traceable U.S. prosecutors charged Jonathan Spalletta in connection with the 2021 Uranium Finance hacks, which allegedly drained more than $53 million from the protocol and contributed to its collapse. According to the DOJ, the case includes charges of computer fraud and money laundering, with prosecutors alleging that part of the proceeds moved through Tornado Cash and that some funds have already been seized. The broader signal matters: DeFi exploits are no longer being treated only as anonymous on-chain incidents. They are increasingly becoming prosecutable financial crimes with real-world legal consequences. Metaplanet Has Become the Third-Largest Public Bitcoin Treasury Company Japan’s Metaplanet has climbed to the No. 3 spot among public Bitcoin treasury companies after reporting 40,177 BTC in holdings, behind only Strategy and Twenty One Capital. BitcoinTreasuries data shows Strategy still leads by a wide margin with 762,099 BTC, while Metaplanet’s move into the top three marks the first time a non-U.S. company has broken into that tier. This is more than a leaderboard update. It is another sign that the corporate Bitcoin treasury model is expanding beyond the United States and becoming a global balance-sheet strategy. |
